There are several major things that need to be covered in this post(that are facts), as well as addressing a few questions that a ridiculous amount of players are asking(due to theories posted as facts, click-bait mostly). Also there is some very useful cheat sheets and graphs included(things like perfect CP for raid bosses, counter cheatsheets and time tables for the event!)! Plus a few little things you can do to be prepared for the event!
!!! Go fest has changed second window to 1 PM, the other 2 remain the same!!!

Go-Fest is what is going to set off the major event which will result in the release of the first legendary pokemon(assuming the attendees can defeat the legendary pokemon). It will also set off a variety of bonuses based on the type of pokemon caught at the actual go fest location in Chicago! So now I will break down each level of this.
At Event: at the event players will have to selectively choose which pokemon they want to catch, the selection will be for their preference as to the bonuses that they want to unlock. The bonuses are listed on the picture above. The unlocking will be done in 3 30 minute increments, there are listed and im sure will be announced at the festival.
Around the world: For everyone that isn't at the fest, niantic hasn't left you out! We will still all need to contribute as our contribution will determine how long these bonuses will be active for, first tier will give 24 hours, second tier 48, and third will unlock the mystery(This is important as they have informed us that legendary pokemon were involved today, thats from niantic as linked in the introduction article). For everyone around the world you will need to just catch as many pokemon as possible for the three 30 minute intervals, so no being picky, just catch everything you can!
This part is tricky for everyone around the world because of the different time zones, so here is a chart of all the different time zones, so you know when you and the people in your community need to be out to "catch em all"!
!!! Challenge window 2 has be moved 1 hour ahead, if you're seeing this message the chart hasn't been updated yet, add 1 hour to challenge 2 times!!!

Niantic did a silent change to the schedule, possibly the original was a mistake, here is the new schedule plit off their post
This is where the Mystery Challenge will take place. Since they released a statement confirming the suspicions of legendary pokemon we know this is actually a legendary battle. If Legendary pokemon are defeated at Go-Fest, they will be unlocked worldwide(which ever ones are defeated). Niantic hasn't stated the type or number of legendary pokemon that will spawn.
This next paragraph is educated speculation as Niantic has not officially stated legendary types for release!
However there are 4 stages set up at Go-Fest, 3 spread out and then a main one, a good assumption is that the 3 birds(Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres) will be released on the three stages and then another will be released on the main stage(possibly the birds are guaranteed and another will only be unlocked based on the completion of tier 3). For the 4th stage(the main stage-gym) at Go-fest, there isn't a great determinant as to what legendary will spawn here. The reason why is they could go with multiple options, Mewtwo is probably the most "wanted" one, however they could also save him as he is the most powerful of Gen 1 and Gen 2(this wouldn't surprise me). This could mean they release Mew, which is pretty likely as hes one of the weakest of the legendary pokemon and he is a Gen 1 legendary. Other possibilities include Ho-oH(hes the first legendary we see in pokemon), Lugia(hes the emblem on the medal for legendary raids, hes also not very powerful in the ranks of legendary pokemon based on types), the release of the 3 dogs isn't likely hardly at all( they are a group, second generation, etc), Celebi I think is also one of the least likely options. I surely hope its Mewtwo! Hes my favorite pokemon and their release video did show everyone battling him! But regardless of what they release at least we can get some of them! This all being said it is also possible they only release 1 single legendary pokemon( although I dont see this as then every legendary egg would only be one specific pokemon!)!
This is where all of the bonuses will be released worlwide. Any bonuses from phase 1 and the legendary pokemon as well. I am going to assume everyone will do their parts and unlock all three tiers! So Sunday and Monday we will have a lot of reason to get out and play! I am hoping stardust and experience! With of course legendary raids!
Final notes on Go-Fest:
We cant know for sure what bonuses will be unlocked at go fest, but we can be prepared! There is only a few things we can really prepare for, but here is what I would recommend.
This is one of the things we can best prepare for, and gaining experience is one of the main things EVERY trainer needs to focus on! If you have candies you can use for evolution, save the forms of the pokemon that you can evolve now and have them ready! The window is going to be relatively small in comparison to the bonus windows we have seen for events in the past, so preparation can mean a huge difference in how much you benefit! The other thing you should do is clear up any space you can in your inventory and be stocked on items! (you dont want to be having to do this once the event is already live!).
The most limited resource, I surely hope this is one of the bonuses unlocked! theres really only two things you can do for this, the first is simple preparation, have your inventory cleared of anything you dont need(ie cant evolve for possible double exp, or something valuable- fighting teams, defending teams, or collectibles). The other is something I call pre-cooking, basically you start all your eggs and "cook them"(walking them), within a close range of hatching, when event goes live you have already put most of the work in so they will hatch quickly and allow you to get more hatching in in the same time!( this is also a nice bonus in case of EXP bonuses! So dual purpose preparation!)
This is pretty simple, just know what you want candies for. Pick something that is hard to get and will be useful, Tyranitar, Blissey or Dragonite are my top picks for buddies :). Snorlax used to be, but with CP being a non-factor for new gyms, hes basically just a weak Blissey.
Rumors about Legendary Raids
You will only be able to participate in legendary raids if you have completed 100 raids!
This is NOT something Niantic has said. This is what was released by Niantic, there is no mention of a 100 raid completion anywhere.
As part of our ongoing celebration of Pokémon GO’s one-year anniversary, we’re excited to reveal that Legendary Pokémon are nearly here! Soon, millions of Trainers around the world will be able to discover, battle, and catch these extremely rare and very powerful Pokémon.
As Trainers around the world go out and explore their neighborhoods in search of Pokémon and Raid Battles, they can keep an eye out for unique Legendary Eggs appearing at Gyms. If Trainers and their team are able to successfully defeat a Legendary Raid Boss, they’ll have the opportunity to catch a Legendary Pokémon of their own! While Legendary Pokémon will help them take on the toughest Raid Bosses and Gym Battles, they’re not willing to leave their Trainer’s side, so they can’t be left to defend Gyms.
On July 22, thousands of Trainers in Grant Park for Pokémon GO Fest and the millions of others around the world will be working together to unlock in-game bonuses for the entire Pokémon GO community. If they manage to catch enough Pokémon during the Pokémon GO Fest Challenge Windows, the first Legendary Pokémon will be revealed in Grant Park. If the Trainers in Chicago succeed in defeating the Legendary Pokémon, that Pokémon will start appearing in Raid Battles around the world, after Pokémon GO Fest.
Is it possible that Niantic will have some form of a "entrance level" for Legendary raids ? Yes, in fact it would make sense, they had a level requirement when regular raids were released. However its just speculation as to if or what the limitations would or could be. So I would prepare for being able to do raids! Even if everyone cant take part right away, we will have 48 hours of bonuses which should be more than enough reason to get out and have some fun playing pokemon!
Players will only Be allowed 1 legendary!
First off Niantic hasn't even hinted that we will only be allowed to catch one legendary, more than that it wouldn't make sense at all! There is a ton of reasons that even making the birds specific to teams makes no sense! First off if they only allowed 1 specific pokemon based on either a limitation or based on teams, this would make forming parties next to impossible in a lot of areas! Second This would mean there would be no way for players to fill their Dex(they haven't even confirmed releasing trading!). Even more than this it severely limits the amount of play that each individual gets to do with the release, which means less potential profits for Niantic well also upsetting the entire fanbase! This seems highly improbable. The only restrictions that we know will be on legendary pokemon is that they wont be allowed in gyms, this was mined from the APK as well as being told to us by the best source, Niantic. Here is what they said.
While Legendary Pokémon will help them take on the toughest Raid Bosses and Gym Battles, they’re not willing to leave their Trainer’s side, so they can’t be left to defend Gyms.
In fact the things they have said would lead us to believe that whatever legendary pokemon are caught will be available for all players worldwide! So if its at Go-Fest, you will have your answer!
What wouldn't make sense is if they had a team specific limit, imagine they spawn the three birds, one team fails in defeating it, are they really going to leave out that entire faction? Highly doubtful! People would RAGE!
A legendary raid will take 48 hours to hatch
The video released shows a flash of a 48 hour timer, some people are making the assumption that that means that legendary eggs will spawn and then take 48 hours to hatch. This is possible, however unlikely in my opinion. This video was released 2 days before go-fest begins Thursday, go fest begins on Saturday. The other reason I see this as unlikely, will they really have a gym occupied by a raid egg for two days ? This also would cause issues, if for two days a raid egg sits on a gym, the amount of people that will most likely show up could cause serious issues!( both in game and real world issues, however maybe the invitation holds a key to how this will be handled?). This however is something I cant give a definite answer too I can only use logic to make a guess, because there is no specific details from niantic. We will find out for sure soon !
1. Form a party now!
Lets be real, you dont want to be the person that goes out, finds perhaps your most wanted legendary pokemon, then you spend an hour sitting there waiting to hopefully have a party large enough or strong enough to complete the raid! This is neither time efficient, and possibly coin wasting!(if you attempt and fail!)
Use social media now! Set up a party, find available times for you and your party now!
2. Good Communication methods!
Tons of people are already doing this, a large majority of us have been doing this since the beginning of the game! Massive text groups, twitter feeds, facebook groups, IM groups etc. Before these mostly helped players plan gym takedowns, defending rebuilding, essentially things not all players were interested in. However with Raids(something i think everyone is interested in) these are an absolute must to efficiently find and take down raids.
If you don't already have one, make one with your friends, and search local social media for possible people interested in joining in your area! Also be friendly with those people you meet at gyms, because they are obviously interested in the raids too!
These groups are also group for people to share rare pokemon they find!
Cheat sheet for Legendary raids
I already wrote a guide on what pokemon to focus on getting too use in raid battles against legendarys, you can read that here! However if you are not yet prepared and simply need to know what is best to fill in the spaces you cant fill with best choices, here is a quick list of options in a descending order of usefulness. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS AS ADVICE THAT ANYTHING ON THIS LIST IS WORTH POWERING UP! Many of the things included i would NEVER invest dust on!
I will place # rankings on things that have value to invest dust. The number following the # indicates its usefulness in comparison to other # pokemon IN THIS MATCHUP.
Other things with % sign indicate not a complete waste but better spent elsewhere!
Everything else listed without an indicator is useless in my opinion and holds no future value.

Level 20 perfect CP
You're going to want to know this, because determining how good the IV of the particular raid base you have encountered might determine how you attempt to catch it!
I put a lot of time into this compilation to hopefully help a bunch of players! If you have questions or would like to see something added, please leave a comment. Please do share as I spend my free time and money to make and host these in a no add no bullshit environment for players, so the more people it helps the better :).
Super stoked for Legendary Pokemon! Good luck everyone!
